In Our Kitchen

You never know what we might be "cooking up" in our kitchen!

A new body lotion. salve, oil...
equal parts coconut oil and shea butter, melted and mixed well
then cooled to just warm
add in equal amounts of frankincense, lavender, citrus bliss, and helichrysum
(for 1/2 cup of "lotion" I used 10 drops of each)

lots and lots of kale and spinach
mostly for smoothies, but some for recipes and salads

and yarrow tea
just because the preschool children love to pick it to steep for afternoon "tea"
with honey of course

The Lighting of a Fire

A few weeks ago, after a some big rains, the children were busily collecting fallen branches and making a pile. The bigger boys were sure that they could rub sticks or rocks together and start a fire. After a couple days of no luck, they saw Poppaw John out mowing and told him of their problem.

Quick as a wink he came over with a little tin box. I knew that box well. He instructed the children to gather some dry leaves and small twigs, and set to work.

After a few moments with the flint and steel, there sparks and great squeals of excitement.

A few puffs of air and some dry grass, and there it was. Small, but sure. Fire!
Just call him Prometheus. He is a Titan in their eyes.

Each of the children took a turn and most of them got some sparks.

Bunny had just as much luck, if not more, than the bigger boys. She was thrilled.

Squirrely even got into the action. Giggling after every stroke.

Some of the children drifted away. Others stayed, perfecting the technique.
They were all excited to tell Nana about their adventures.

"Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire."

Mr McGregor's Garden

Poppaw John (NanaKerri's father, Hannah's grandfather, Bunny and Squirrely's GREATgrandfather) has a wonderful garden.  All the children love going there.  Each week, there are new things to discover.

some loved the onions.. and some wanted to love the onions

radishes were tried and mostly rejected

spinach, kale, and lettuces were nibbled

some of the children took it upon themselves to remove beetles from the potato plants,
thus contributing to the health of the garden they love so much!
