An Enchanted Childhood ~ Summer Break

All of our playschool children have been with us anywhere from eight months to six years.  They love to be outside as much as possible ... but a few weeks ago we were asked to keep a five year old girl, who we had known through church, for the few remaining weeks of summer.  On her first days here she did NOT enjoy outside time.. she was scared of bugs, was too hot, just did not enjoy all this outside play time.  Not.at.all.

My, oh, my how that has changed!  She climbs hills (and caves), wades in the creek, runs off to the next adventure, begs to go to the garden, and loves learning about the various plants and little creatures.

Little Squirrely is perfectly content, regardless of what we may be doing, wrapped close to mama!

Placing this boat out by the Big Creek has proved to be a great idea!

Off through the big field...
(whoops!!)

... to hop a ride on the farm gate!

Here is an example of allowing children to lead in their play.  Some of the older children had seen parts of the Olympics.  In no time at all, they had created a game in which NanaKerri had to "announce" their FULL name, country, and the sport they were participating in, as the athletes then ran, surfed, slid, or "boarded" down our mudslide to victory!! Over and over and over. For several days!

It was another FUN week at playschool.  Next week is our last "summer break" week, followed a week off, and then we start the fall schedule.

  1. I just love your preschool. Great story about your 5 year old, so satisfying seeing them come to love the outdoors, I have the same satisfaction here o the farm when the youngsters are scared of the animals on their 1st day then totally at home with them by the end of their holiday!

  2. Amazing. As a primary school teacher with a three year old little boy, I adore these photos and how they show the freedom of childhood. Your charges are certainly learning through play and it is so refreeshing to not see them wrapped up in cotton wool. I'd send my child to your playschool!

  3. Hannah, is that a Moby Wrap? And how do you wrap Squirrely in it? I'm trying to get the Newborn Hug Hold down with my Moby, but Cash seems to sink lower than Squirrely looks here, and he doesn't seem very comfortable. Any ideas?

    1. Mia ~ I tried the Newborn Hug Hold and had the same issue. I ended up using a combo of it and the regular Hug Hold. Follow the regular Hug Hold directions, but at the end tuck his feet into the outer cloth instead of letting them hang out. This will give him the support his little legs need, while still holding him up higher and more secure under his bottom. Hope this helps :)
