An Enchanted Childhood ~ A House for Hermit Crab

Keeping with the beach/ocean theme, our book for this week was Eric Carle's A House for Hermit Crab. We read it each day. It follows a crab each month, for a year, as he decorates his new shell.  Each day we sang our "months" song.  Monday, we made a cute Hermit Crab craft.  The children decorated their shell and then I traced their hands for the crab.

In the book, the crab meets up with sea urchins.  Later in the week, we used clay (1st time playing with clay rather than playdough) and tooth picks to make our own sea urchins.  We found the idea here!

While the "big kids" made the sea urchins, the "highchair gang" colored card stock (as well as mouths, faces, arms, hands...) which I cut into star fish!

Our last activity, for the week, was making a star fish from sandpaper.  I was thrilled to find a pack of 24 sandpaper squares at the local Dollar General store for $1.  I cut two for each child.  They colored both stars with our rock crayons.  I glued the two pieces, sand side out, and we made a necklace!

Our warm days are numbered, so we run outside every chance we can!

Ohhhh, the carrots are gone.. but never fear,
Poppaw John planted a fall crop which be ready soon!

Taking a break to talk it over!
Yep, Life is good!

  3. Love your ideas to go along with this favourite book! We did a 'beach' theme in the summer and these ideas would fit in nicely.

  4. Looks like so much fun. In the pic of Squirrely in the white hat, she is making a face just like Cash always makes. Maybe it's a universal baby face. :)
