For The Love of Cloth~by NanaKerri

Three days a week, I wash cloth diapers. I prep each one, making sure the inserts are out of their pockets and the velcro is in place on the laundry tabs. As I do so, I admire the lovely prints and designs of the sweet diapers made by a friend of mine. I add the proper amount of Charlie’s detergent and an equal amount of OxiClean . I wash them 1st on cold and then run them through a 2nd wash, detergent free, on hot. I dry them--in the dryer, though recently I bought two drying racks, from Ikea, so I can start hanging them outside in the sun.

After I take the soft, warm diapers from the dryer (inhaling deeply and sighing as I smile), I lovingly fold the all-ies (all in ones) and stuff the pockets, saying a little prayer for the precious babe that will soon wear them. How old is my baby you might wonder? My youngest child is thirteen and a freshman in our home school/high school. I am not washing diapers because I am the mama of a wee one. I am washing them because I am a nana. A nana with an addiction to cloth diapering. "Doing diapers" feeds my soul. It brings back memories of when my children were babies and I hung their prefolds on the line to dry nine months out of the year. It brings a sense of calm and peace and purpose to my day. No matter how crazy the day, how stressed I might be, I feel myself, immediately and totally, relax as I carry the load of warm diapers to the couch to fold. I freely admit I begged my daughter to allow me the privilege of washing my grandbabygirl’s diapers. And thankfully she loves her mama enough to know I need it.

I praise God for the simple pleasure and instant calming affect that “doing diapers” gives me! I pray my children will keep me in cloth diaper wearing grandbabies for many years to come.
